If that was the case, it didn't actually happen, although I wouldn't be shocked at all if the short was done in widescreen just to capture a more cinematic feel. Interestingly, 'Variety Speak' was animated in widescreen, and many have assumed that this cartoon was meant to play theatrically. The song itself is very well written and sung (though I much prefer how it sounds on the 1995 'Variety Pack' album) and it's fun to see how many of those headlines have actually come true, but the short itself lacks energy. But my issue with the song portion is that everything is very static, going repeatedly from a Variety headline to a visual translation. The animation has a lot of personality, and Wakko's impersonation of Nixon is a riot. To be honest, I really like the beginning of the short, with Wakko performing doggy tricks with Dot. Full disclosure time: I absolutely love 'Variety Speak' as a song, but I've never really enjoyed it much as a cartoon.
